The Hotel Britomart Winemaker in Residence series are bi-monthly wine events to learn more about and meet some of New Zealand’s greatest winemakers and wine estates, hosted by Fine Wine Director, David Nash.  Following on from the success of our previous wineries being The Landing Wines and Man O’ War, Akitu Wine and our Chardonnay Masterclass, the next to be showcased within the series is Paritua.

Join critically acclaimed Hawkes Bay winemaker Jason Stent of Paritua vineyard and winery and The Hotel Britomart’s fine wine director David Nash for the exclusive release and celebration of 10 vintages of Paritua’s iconic red wine, 21:12.

At our two Winemaker in Residence events, Jason will be sharing the decade-long journey to creating this wine. As well as tasting the 2020 21:12, which will be released at the event, Jason will also take a deep dive in Paritua’s wine library, tasting some of their most celebrated vintages from large-format, estate-cellared bottles.

“Paritua is a Hawkes Bay winery that has steadily grown in stature over the past decade and certainly has a place on my watch list of rising stars.”
— Bob Campbell MW, March 2020.

Two events are being hosted, the winemakers taster, held in kingi on Wednesday 31st May and the winemakers dinner, held in The Libraries on Thursday 1st February.

About The Hotel Britomart
In the two years since opening on 1 October 2020, The Hotel Britomart has been locally and internationally recognised as a sustainable hospitality success story, winning more than 20 awards for design, architecture, hospitality and sustainability.

The opening of The Libraries, in March 2021, was an early milestone. “There are very few event spaces like The Libraries in Aotearoa – beautifully refurbished heritage spaces that are a celebration of New Zealand art, craftsmanship and design, where world-class food and wine can be enjoyed,” says Clinton Farley General Manager.

About kingi
kingi (short for kingfish) is a restaurant that offers fresh, locally sourced food in thoughtful, approachable ways. Located just steps from The Hotel Britomart lobby on the ground floor of the heritage Masonic Building (which has been refurbished as part of The Hotel Britomart project), kingi introduces guests at the hotel to the city, and welcomes Aucklanders with an easy-going warmth that tells them it’s their place too. Open for everything from early-morning coffee to drinks, snacks, aperitifs and fuller plates at night, kingi also offers The Hotel Britomart guests selected items as a room service menu throughout the day.

About Collection by TFE Hotels
The Hotel Britomart is an affiliate of TFE Hotels under the Collection by TFE Hotels brand. The Collection by TFE Hotels represents beautiful hotels hallmarked by authenticity and provenance, each designed with individual character and charm. With a collection of properties that encompass striking design, customised service and attention to the individual such as The Calile Hotel Brisbane, Melbourne’s The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins and Hotel Kurrajong Canberra. The Hotel Britomart embodies these concepts while remaining proudly a product of its unique location.

AUCKLAND: Bringing together the relaxed warmth of kingi and the refined elegance of The Libraries at The Hotel Britomart, kingi Private is a sophisticated private dining room or meeting space that gives Aucklanders and out-of-towners a unique place in which to gather for a feast or to do good business.

Step inside, and you enter a light-filled, brick-lined dining room with echoes of kingi in the expansive raw-edge swamp kauri slab table set beneath a shimmering fish-scale chandelier. A glass-boxed ‘larder kitchen’ gives diners glimpses of chefs preparing seasonal dishes while comfortable padded dining chairs invite guests to settle in for the day or night.

At the north end of the room a wooden sideboard turns out to hide a 65” screen, which rises from the cabinet’s surface to transform the space so that board-style meetings, intimate product launches or special presentations can be held. High-speed internet connectivity and state-of-the-art AV facilities provide everything needed for a workday.

Situated on the ground floor of the heritage Buckland Masonic Building, kingi Private was designed by Cheshire Architects, the minds behind kingi, The Libraries and The Hotel Britomart. The tableware is hand-made by local ceramic artist Rachel Carter, while the dining chairs are sourced from local furniture maker Simon James.

For private dinning Co-founder of kingi Tom Hishon and head chef Uelese Mua have designed a sumptuous five-course tasting menu that reflects the restaurant’s sustainable and seasonal ethos and highlights ingredients from their most cherished producers in new dishes. “We’re going to have some fun in this space and create an interactive experience that will be remembered for all the right reasons,” says Tom.

For meetings, catering options for the space range from breakfasts, lunches and working snacks created by The Hotel Britomart’s culinary team, to the five-course kingi Private tasting menu.
The space was developed in part to meet the needs of hotel guests wanting to host private dinners or events during their stay, and packages combining room reservations and kingi Private bookings for day or evening events will be available through The Hotel Britomart.

Hours | 7am- late for full-day events | 7am-5pm for conferences | 6pm-late for private dining
Capacity | up to 14 guests for a sit-down meal, or 12 for a catered meeting/presentation.
kingi Private is now open for bookings, for seatings from 1 April onwards.

AUCKLAND: The Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel, has released its first sustainability report. The report, which will be published annually, sets out the hotel’s sustainability goals and details its commitment to sustainable operations.

“It was a huge effort to build and open the country’s first 5 Green Star hotel,” says Clinton Farley, The Hotel Britomart’s general manager. “Now we’re committed to operating the hotel sustainably every day. Environmental and community impact is a key business consideration for the entire team, and our sustainability report is an important way of setting goals and holding ourselves accountable.”

The Hotel Britomart opened in October 2020, with its design and build certified with 5 Green Star ratings from the NZ Green Building Council. Since then, it has been recognised with a Gold Sustainable Tourism Award from Qualmark, New Zealand tourism’s official quality assurance organisation, the Best Sustainable Business award at the NZ Hospitality Awards, and was runner up in National Geographic magazine’s international Good Egg award for the most sustainable hotel.

The Hotel Britomart team has an intense focus on sustainable operations. This year, the hotel has embarked on a process to become a Toitū Carbonreduce organisation to enable it to track and reduce its operational emissions. It has also introduced a plastic-free policy which asks all products supplied to the hotel be delivered in fully home compostable, biodegradable, recyclable or reusable packaging. So far, it has achieved 95 percent compliance from its suppliers.

Sustainability commitments extend into the hotel’s procurement policy: 80 percent of all goods procured by the hotel are New Zealand-made, localising the supply chain and reducing emissions. Local suppliers include Nelson-based uniform designer Tamzin Hawkins, who ensures all the hotel’s uniforms are New Zealand-made from compostable fabrics, the Chatham Island Food Co, which supplies sustainably harvested seafood to kingi, the hotel’s restaurant, and local ceramicists Rachel Carter and Elena Renker, whose work features in each guest room in the hotel.

“All these efforts show that we’re not just saying we’re a sustainble hotel – we’re doing the work to prove it,” Clinton Farley says. “We’re also looking to continuously improve, so our sustainability report helps set a benchmark for ourselves, and offers transparency to our guests as well.”

Stay Green: Guests can book The Hotel Britomart’s Stay Green package and contribute to offsetting their carbon footprint. For every booking received, the hotel plants a native tree at its sister property, The Landing, in the Bay of Islands. The package includes an overnight stay and a leisurely lunch in kingi, The Hotel Britomart’s restaurant with a focus on sustainably sourced ingredients. Each booking also receives a gift that celebrates the talents of local artisans such as pottery by Rachel Carter, 100 percent zero-waste blankets from Mavis and Osborn and much more.

kingi, the Britomart restaurant with a focus on sustainable seafood and the best fresh New Zealand produce, is celebrating the new year with a two-hat rating and the expansion of its expert culinary team.

Last night, kingi, at The Hotel Britomart was awarded Best Hotel Restaurant in New Zealand’s Cuisine Good Food Awards, as well as gaining a coveted two-hat rating with an overall score of 17/20.

“It’s great to have a high-quality seafood restaurant in the heart of old Auckland that walks the talk without compromise when it comes to sustainability and ethical fishing,” the award’s judges noted in their citation.

Co-founder Tom Hishon (centre) is now working with kingi’s new Chef de Cuisine, Uelese Mua (right), to deliver kingi’s unique all-day offerings. Tom continues to drive the creative direction and menu concepts for the restaurant, with Uelese executing that vision for the restaurant each day.

Uelese’s arrival coincides with the hiring of Andrew Lautenbach, the new Head Chef for The Hotel Britomart, part of the Collection by TFE Hotels, who is responsible for overseeing the hotel’s overall food offerings including The Libraries, the private function spaces in the heritage Masonic Building above kingi that are also part of The Hotel Britomart.

“Now that kingi is a year old, it’s really exciting that we’re able to expand the team and refresh our offerings,” says the restaurant’s co-founder, Tom Hishon. “As well as welcoming Andrew and Uelese on board and winning Best Hotel Restaurant in the Cuisine Good Food Awards, we have a new glass roof on our laneway dining space and fresh seating arrangements in the restaurant – all of which means we have great experiences to offer our guests in 2022.”

Andrew Lautenbach is originally from Hamilton and spent the early part of his career working in the French Alps before returning to Auckland, where he has worked at O’Connell Street Bistro and Hallertau in Riverhead. Classically trained in French cuisine, Andrew has developed his own personal cooking style focused on local and seasonal produce with an uncomplicated and fresh approach.

“I am looking forward to working with the team at The Hotel Britomart as we have the same goals and ethos regarding sustainability and a positive team environment. Creativity is important and working alongside Tom and Uelese at kingi will only make the brand stronger,” Andrew says.

Uelese brings a wealth of experience to his new role, including leadership at several high-end Auckland restaurants – including Euro and Soul – and a six-year stint in France in kitchens in Paris and Marseille. Uelese has Samoan heritage and enjoys bringing Pacific flavours to his cooking.

“I am thrilled to be working at kingi and being able to focus on cooking with sustainably caught fish – and honouring it by reducing food wastage and utilising the entire product,” Uelese says.

“We’re delighted about having Andrew’s experience and expert eye overseeing The Hotel Britomart’s culinary offerings, especially in The Libraries, our exceptional suite of private dining and private function spaces,” says Clinton Farley, General Manager of The Hotel Britomart. “With Andrew and Uelese joining the team, we are extremely excited about the continued evolution of our Food and Beverage offering in the year ahead.”

kingi is open seven days for all-day service including dinner, inviting guests to experience the best of local seafood and produce. Aperitivo Hour offers specialty drinks, wine and beers and flat breads from the woodfire oven, daily between 4-6pm. The Hotel Britomart embodies these concepts while remaining proudly a product of its unique location.

The Hotel Britomart has picked up another global accolade, this time in National Geographic Traveller Magazine’s annual Hotel Awards. The London-based magazine’s annual Hotel Awards acknowledge the latest tastemakers, trendsetters and game-changers in the hotel business around the world.

The Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel, was awarded runner-up in the Good Egg (most sustainable hotel) category. Xigera Safari Lodge in Botswana won the category, while Costa Rica’s Cielo Lodge was also a runner-up.

“We’re honoured to be included in this prestigious list, and delighted that the hard work we put into ensuring The Hotel Britomart is a sustainability leader is being recognised,” says Clinton Farley, General Manager of The Hotel Britomart. “Genuine sustainability requires serious commitment in the design and build of a hotel and in its ongoing operations. We know that sustainability matters to our guests, and that our efforts in this area enhance their experience of visiting the hotel. That’s why we continue to strive to minimise the environmental impact of every facet of our day-to-day work.”

The Hotel Britomart’s 5 Green Star rating is certified by the New Zealand Green Building Council. This rating required detailed attention in every aspect of the building, from choice of materials and paints to the selection of efficient tapware, lighting, and state-of-the-art air conditioning systems. 80% of construction waste at the hotel was recycled, while the building is designed to have 50% fewer carbon emissions than a structure that meets the minimum standards of the local building code.

The commitment of the hotel team to sustainability extended beyond what was required for certification. The hotel’s uniforms, for example, are made of sustainably sourced linen and organic cotton and were dyed and made in New Zealand. They can be re-dyed to extend their life, and will compost when they’re no longer suitable to wear. Pillows and duvets in the guest rooms are filled with a microfibre derived from recycled plastic bottles, while the bed linen, bathrobes and towelling are all certified organic cotton. The hotel’s restaurant kingi, works with a local glass studio, recycling glass water bottles into plates and carafes and is a champion of supporting sustainable fisheries.

Like all the buildings in the Britomart precinct, The Hotel Britomart’s ongoing environmental performance is audited and managed using the NZ Green Building Council’s Green Star Performance Tool. Click here for the full list of Hotel Award winners.

About Collection by TFE Hotels

The Hotel Britomart has picked up three prizes in the Auckland architecture awards. The Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Auckland Branch Awards were announced at a ceremony at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.

The hotel, designed by Cheshire Architects and opened in October, was recognised with awards in three categories: Commercial Architecture; Hospitality; and Interior Architecture. It also won a Resene Colour Award for its interior. The five-person jury described the hotel as “a generous gift to Aucklanders”.

The awards are an annual celebration of Auckland and Northland architecture, a peer-reviewed selection of projects recognised by a jury from the Auckland branch of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The five-person jury visited projects in person to choose the winners. “When approaching this building’s deeply thoughtful façade, architecture as a process of crafting – from concept, to thousands of drawings, to the relationships between architect, contractors and clients, to people as occupants – feels magical,” the jury noted in its award citation.

“This complex upgrade of the historic Buckland Masonic building includes two new rooftop pavilion hotel suites, offices from level 1 to 3, and laneways at ground level to connect with the lively Britomart precinct, but despite all this activity, the bespoke nature of the build makes every piece and part feel meaningful. From its custom door handles to the sight of that façade against the blue Tāmaki Makaurau sky, The Hotel Britomart is a generous gift for Aucklanders.”

The Hotel Britomart was developed and is owned by Cooper and Company, the company responsible for the ongoing regeneration of the Britomart precinct. The project included the construction of a new, brick-clad 10-storey tower as well as the refurbishment of the adjacent heritage Buckland and Masonic Buildings and the creation of a new laneway through them that connects Galway Street and Customs Street East.

“We’re incredibly proud of the hotel and the response from our guests shows how deeply they appreciate Cheshire Architects’ attention to detail and the efforts of our development team and Bracewell Construction,” says The Hotel Britomart’s General Manager, Clinton Farley. “It was designed to be a hotel that feels like a special addition to its neighbourhood and its city, and we’re honoured that the Te Kāhui Whaihanga jury feels we have achieved that.”

The hotel, which contains 99 rooms and five highly crafted Landing Suites, is New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel, certified by the New Zealand Green Building Council.

Conde Nast Traveler’s 2021 Hot List ranks hotel among the world’s best

The Hotel Britomart has been named one of the best new hotels in the world, landing a place on Conde Nast Traveler’s prestigious 2021 Hot List.

The 25th annual edition of the Hot List picks the best of the year’s global hotel openings. The Hotel Britomart is the only New Zealand property on the list, and one of only two from Australasia.

“Can an eco-friendly hotel match the quality of a traditional luxury retreat? The Hotel Britomart – New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel – proves it can,” the magazine says.

With 99 guest rooms and five luxurious Landing Suites, The Hotel Britomart opened in October 2020 at the heart of downtown waterfront Auckland’s Britomart precinct.

The Hotel Britomart is New Zealand designed, developed and owned. It was designed by Auckland’s Cheshire Architects and developed by Cooper and Company, the team behind the rejuvenation of the Britomart neighbourhood since 2003. The Hotel Britomart project also involved the refurbishment of three adjacent heritage buildings, and the creation of a new plant-filled, pedestrian-friendly laneway connecting Galway and Customs Streets.

“We’re honoured to be on this prestigious global list and to be the only New Zealand hotel to be recognised,” says Clinton Farley, General Manager of The Hotel Britomart. “It was a huge challenge to open a hotel during a global pandemic, but we didn’t waver from our original vision and are delighted to see that vision is resonating with people.”

With an exterior clad in hand-made bricks, The Hotel Britomart’s guest rooms feature natural timber finishes, the works of local ceramic artists, organic cotton sheets, locally made skincare products and a selection of New Zealand books. Downstairs, the all-day restaurant kingi celebrates chef Tom Hishon’s focus on sustainable seafood.

In a New Zealand first, the hotel was designed and built to 5 Green Star standards established by the NZ Green Building Council. This required focus on the sustainable credentials of everything from paint finishes to taps and light fixtures. 80% of construction waste was recycled, and the hotel’s annual carbon emissions are expected to the 50% lower than a building designed to the minimum standards of the New Zealand building code.

One thing that wasn’t anticipated when the hotel was under construction was the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed opening by two months.

“Obviously, we’ve had some quiet weeks, but the hotel was always designed as a long-term proposition. The last six months have really allowed us to fine-tune the hotel operations, and the strong bookings we’ve seen in the last month or so have been very encouraging. We feel we’re really well-positioned to welcome travellers as borders continue to reopen,” Farley says.
