Designed by Cheshire Architects, the 10-floor hotel on Galway Street in the Britomart precinct offers 99 guest rooms and an even more premium stay in its five Landing Suites, which bring the luxurious coastal flavour of The Landing in the Bay of Islands to the centre of the bustling Britomart neighbourhood.
The Hotel Britomart is locally designed, built and owned. It’s a place that does detail like no other, with interior timber accents and an exterior of hand-made bricks, organic cotton sheets and built-in sofas, hand-crafted vases and a mini-library of New Zealand books in every room and suite.
Some of the hotel rooms have panoramic views of the Waitematā Harbour, while others take in vistas of the city skyline or of bustling Takutai Square in the heart of the Britomart neighbourhood.
“The Hotel Britomart aims to provide a sanctuary so calm that the only challenge you will face is uncurling yourself from the comfort of your room to enjoy all that downtown Auckland has to offer,” says Clinton Farley, The Hotel Britomart General Manager.
As New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel, certified by the New Zealand Green Building Council, The Hotel Britomart is sustainable from the ground up.
“Our guests can rest easy in their compostable hotel slippers knowing that the environmental heavy lifting is being done for them,” says Farley.
The Hotel Britomart’s commitment to sustainability isn’t just about making the building efficient. It’s also about supporting local economies and showcasing the work of local artisans, businesses, designers, and regional producers.
With a focus on sustainable seafood, kingi – a brilliant all-day restaurant in the atmospheric laneway of the heritage Masonic Building (right next door to The Hotel Britomart), will be the new spot for locals and visitors alike.
“We wanted our diners to be able to come to kingi and not spend the earth. There’s no pressure, it’s a neighbourhood home away from home,” says kingi Executive Chef, Tom Hishon.
“What was really appealing about bringing kingi to Britomart was the idea of being part of the long-term vision for Auckland. It’s the chance for us to be part of something bigger than just our restaurant,” says Hishon.
Imagined by Cooper and Company, the team behind the rejuvenation of the Britomart neighbourhood since 2003, The Hotel Britomart project also involved the refurbishment of three adjacent heritage buildings, and the creation of a new plant-filled, pedestrian-friendly laneway connecting Galway and Customs Streets.
This intimate cobblestone walkway is open to the public and filled with outdoor seating, a cosy fireplace, and the theatre of Tom’s open preparation kitchen.
Just a few steps from the hotel lobby are the sunny plant-lined streets and historic warehouses of the Britomart neighbourhood, which house an unforgettable array of the country’s best restaurants, bars, boutiques and cafes.
Book your city staycation at The Hotel Britomart now. The Hotel Britomart‘s signature Britomart Black Card Package includes a $50 Britomart Black Card for each night booked that can be spent at any one of the 65+ restaurants, bars and retailers in the Britomart neighbourhood. Before dawn, invited guests and team members gathered beside Chris Bailey’s artwork Pou Tū Te Rangi in the courtyard linking Te Ara Tāhuhu and Galway Street, then passed through the hotel in small groups to bless each of its spaces. Members of our hotel team joined in the Karakia incantations, which are traditionally used to increase spiritual goodwill.

The Hotel Britomart, part of the TFE Hotels collection, will be the first 5 Green Star hotel in New Zealand, certified by the New Zealand Green Building Council. The 5 Green Star rating demonstrates the building’s deep commitment to longevity and sustainability.
Designed by Cheshire Architects, the 10-floor hotel on Galway Street will contain 99 guest rooms and five luxurious suites. The hotel project also involves the refurbishment of two adjacent heritage warehouses, the Masonic and Buckland Buildings.
The building’s developers, Cooper and Company, looked to reduce the environmental impact of the building and ensure optimal performance after it opens.
In The Hotel Britomart, the Green Star rating allows for a rigorous assessment of the environmental impact of every construction decision, as well as tracking of important data such energy and water use when the building is operational. “There are a lot of technical components, but everything has a clear intent and outcome that relates to a positive impact on the environment and human health and wellbeing,” says Matthew Cockram, chief executive of Cooper and Company, the company behind the development.
“The Green Star rating allows us to convert this information to a form that the general public can easily understand.”
Green Star certification applies to almost every decision made during construction, but there are a few key aspects that make the development of a Green Star building truly unique. One of them is the recycling or reuse of construction waste; the industry benchmark for which is 70% of construction waste to be re-used or recycled, a target which The Hotel Britomart has already greatly surpassed with a result just under 80%.
Another is that the hotel’s operational greenhouse gas emissions are projected to be 50% lower than a building that meets the minimum requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.
“The beauty of The Green Star rating is that it allows us to stay true to what we originally set out to do. It holds us accountable, through third party assessment, to a promise we made to the environment and the community,” says Cockram.
Beyond the design and construction of The Hotel Britomart, there are important elements inside the hotel and its rooms which aren’t included as part of the Green Star ratings but were carefully selected in line with the hotel’s sustainable ethos. Inside The Hotel Britomart:
● The pillows and duvets are made from luxury microfibre derived from plastic bottles
● The sheets are organic cotton by Eco-Linen
● All mattresses are part of a Sleepyhead programme that recycles them at the end of their use
● All staff uniforms are locally manufactured from natural materials, with the ability to be redyed to extend their life, recycled or composted
● Guest rooms are stocked with New Zealand brand Sans[ceuticals] organic, hair and skincare products with refillable bottles
● The slippers in each guest room are 99% compostable and have compressed wood fibre soles, linen uppers, cotton padding and come encased in a craft paper bag
● Laundry and tote bags, as well as hairdryer bags, are by Duffle and Co, made by local communities in Bali who offset their emissions by 120%
● The hotel has also supported local artisans, including ceramicist Rachel Carter who created large vases and soap dishes for each guest room, while other vases in every guest room are by Albany based artist, Elena Renker
The Green Star rating system also requires careful attention to detail in the selection of materials. With flicker-free lighting, access to natural light, environmentally friendly paints and coatings, responsibly sourced timber, highly efficient taps and fittings to reduce water use, The Hotel Britomart let sustainable principles govern every decision.
The Hotel Britomart already has a 5 Green Star rating for its design and is targeting a 5 Green Star Build rating after completion. The hotel will operate under the NZ Green Building Council’s Green Star Performance Tool. Cooper and Company also own and manage the other buildings in the nine-block Britomart precinct, which already operate under the New Zealand Green Building Council’s Green Star Performance Tool. Cooper and Company is the first property company in New Zealand to apply the Performance Tool to its buildings.
The Hotel Britomart’s 5 Green Star certification also accords with The Tiaki Promise, a responsible tourism initiative created by Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand, NZ Māori Tourism and other organisations, which encourages hosts and visitors to take responsibility for safe and sustainable tourism, and act as guardians of land, sea and nature for current and future generations.
The Hotel Britomart is being built by Bracewell Construction, and will be managed by Australia’s TFE Hotels on behalf of Cooper and Company. Cooper and Company is the asset and development manager for the Britomart Group, which holds a contract for the long-term ownership and development of the Britomart Precinct.

Hailing from Brisbane, Gunn began his career locally at Isis Brasserie, then in Sydney at Bécasse under Justin North before relocating to France. He worked in Paris for six years within a number of Michelin-starred restaurants including Les Ambassadeurs at Hôtel de Crillon, Le Taillevent with Michelin-starred Alain Solivérès, and Le Cinq at Hotel George V with Michelin-starred Christian Le Squer.
Upon Gunn’s return to Brisbane, he assumed the role of Executive Chef at acclaimed restaurants The Euro and Urbane working alongside Head Chef and now wife, Amélie Gunn.
I’ve spent a long time in Europe training in 1 to 3 Michelin starred restaurants and learning about food all around the world and have come back to Brisbane wanting to share that unique knowledge and experience with locals and visitors alike! Our cuisine focuses on locally sourced Queensland produce that speaks for itself on the plate,” says Gunn. “I believe cooking the food you love is what makes you the best version of yourself and that’s what we’ve done here at Lobby Bar.”
Gunn has revamped The Lobby Bar’s menus, which now consists of a hearty breakfast menu, a considered array of fresh light-lunch options and an evening tapas menu. This new seasonal menu will be paired with Lobby Bar’s updated cocktail menu, wine list and local award-winning signature coffee.
Working closely with local suppliers and producers, Gunn has spent some time getting to really understand what will be available and when to allow for the best in-season produce to craft the freshest and most diverse menu for Lobby Bar. The kitchen will serve up some of the freshest local fruit and veggies thanks to local owner-operated Suncoast Fresh, where Gunn worked for 6 months prior to taking the role at Lobby Bar. Some other favourites include Brisbane Valley Quail, which is farmed just one hour from Brisbane and Baby Squid that are fished off Moreton Bay.
Everything on Gunn’s menu is made inhouse from these fresh, local and premium quality ingredients.
Some of Chef’s favourite dishes include the Shakshuka for breakfast, with its red pepper and tomato ragout taking its inspiration from his Mums kasundi – a real crowd-pleaser, the Buckwheat Risotto which is vegan, gluten and dairy-free and made with a whole lot of love and from the dinner tasters menu the Baby Squid that is stuffed with a spicy chorizo mix and sits on a chorizo crumb, finished with a Spanish pil-pil sauce – the perfect complement to the dish.
The new menu will be refined and updated seasonally and keeping with the fresh local trend, there’s also plans to utilise the rooftop of The Calile Hotel and build a culinary garden and beehive – to service the Lobby Bar kitchen. Other special events, chef collaboration dinners and special menus to be announced throughout the year.
Lobby Bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The scaffolding is down on The Hotel Britomart construction, revealing its breath-taking brick exterior. Work is now focused on the interiors of the guest rooms and suites, with the hotel’s opening scheduled for 1 October 2020.
The 104-room hotel experienced six weeks of construction delays because of New Zealand’s Covid-19 lockdown, but work on site is now restarted, with the only active Covid-19 cases in the country all in managed isolation.
“Work on The Hotel Britomart site is completely back on track,” says Matthew Cockram, Chief Executive Officer of Cooper and Company, owners of The Hotel Britomart.
“The current circumstances mean our opening in October will focus mostly on domestic tourists, who we think will recognise the enormous appeal of The Hotel Britomart’s design and the many attractions of the Britomart neighbourhood around it.”
Designed by Auckland-based Cheshire Architects, The Hotel Britomart has 99 timber-lined guest rooms and five luxurious Landing Suites. The hotel is a bold new addition to Britomart, the historic waterfront neighbourhood in downtown Auckland that has been the focus of a thoughtful 15-year regeneration process led by Cooper and Company.
In the coming months, The Hotel Britomart will reveal the complete offering and how it will further bring to life the exciting Britomart neighbourhood.
The Hotel Britomart will be part of the Collection by TFE Hotels, managed by TFE Hotels on behalf of Cooper and Company.
Hotel General Manager, Clinton Farley, said TFE Hotels was excited to work with Cooper and Company to open The Hotel Britomart.
“TFE Collection properties are each designed with individual character and charm,” he said, “and striking design and service are their hallmarks.”
Guests can expect customised experiences when The Hotel Britomart opens.
“There’ll be no stiff formality,” Farley says. “Instead, the hotel team will be able to share their enthusiasm in inviting our guests to enjoy all of the richness and variety that Auckland has to offer.”
As well as a new brick-clad tower, the hotel project includes the refurbishment of two neighbouring heritage buildings. A new restaurant named Kingi (short for kingfish) will open on the ground floor of historic Masonic House to serve locals and hotel guests, while three other new restaurants are opening just steps from the hotel entrance.

Coinciding with the re-opening, all in-house restaurants will welcome patrons back including Lobby Bar, SK Steak & Oyster and multi-award-winning poolside venue, Hellenika.
In opening its doors, The Calile Hotel and its popular onsite restaurants will join neighbouring James Street boutiques, restaurants and bars, all of which have resumed trading over the past few weeks.
General Manager of The Calile Hotel, Rob Unson says that it will be a pleasure to once again do what The Calile does best, look after its guests.
“While closing the hotel was a difficult decision, the silver lining is that we were able to make some great enhancements to our service and facilities and also, thoroughly prepare our COVID safe initiatives. Needless to say, our team are excited to get back to work and welcome guests and we’re so pleased that now includes those from interstate as well as locals,” states Unson.
Echoing Unson’s sentiments is Hellenika and SK Steak & Oyster owner and operator, Simon Gloftis who emphasises, ‘I couldn’t be happier having my teams back onsite and doing what we all love to do. Seeing the hospitality industry starting to find its feet again means the world to me’.
The five-star Calile Hotel offers 175 guest rooms and suites, three onsite restaurants, day spa and boutique shopping situated in an enviable location on James Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Rooms are priced from $259 per night. Bookings for The Calile Hotel, Lobby Bar, Hellenika and SK Steak & Oyster are available via the hotel’s website.

One year after The Calile opened its doors to Queensland and the world, Australia’s first urban resort has partnered in a stunning local collaboration with Queensland Ballet. The creative merging of two powerful yet notably Queensland brands is set to remind guests of the beauty and elegance that the hotel delivers along with the genuinely memorable and wholly Queensland holiday experience.
Hotel General Manager, Jeremy Nordkamp said The Calile was proud to partner with such a vibrant and creative company, and their home-grown talent.
“The creative synergy between these two Queensland tourism icons has resulted in a stunning summer campaign designed to connect and cut-through in the leisure and lifestyle space.”
Curated, choreographed and performed by Queensland Ballet’s Jack Lister, the cinematic campaign represents an exquisite interpretation of a day in the life of The Calile Hotel.
Moving within the architectural urban resort spaces, the choreography and dancers bring humour, style, emotion and elegance to the experience as the dancers move effortlessly around the urban resort setting.
“The challenge was never to make the hotel ‘look good’ – it does that on its own – but rather to settle on a concept that showcases how this stunning piece of architecture lives and breathes,” Mr Lister said.
“We looked at how people already experience The Calile, and the irony in it being at once a very public and very private space and reflected that. The main idea is that the hotel brings out a piece of you, or who you want to be, and that’s reflective of the atmosphere created at The Calile.”
“It was always meant to feel tongue in cheek.”
Curate your stay at The Calile this spring or summer from $237 per night. Visit www.thecalilehotel.com. View the collaboration with Queensland Ballet here.

1 March 2019
Exhausted after a business trip that had seen her lap the country in just three short weeks, Stephanie was looking for a great night’s sleep after a busy day of conferencing. What she found instead was an empty ring box hidden in her room with a special code word – she’d just won the grand prize in The Savoy on Little Collins’ and Fairfax & Roberts’ “Princess and the Pear” competition, an exquisite $10,000 pink sapphire and diamond encrusted ring.
“I was tired after a big few weeks at work and a long day, and something caught my eye on the bed as I entered my room,” she said. “I instantly remembered the competition and raced downstairs to tell Carol Douglas, the hotel’s General Manager.”
In Stephanie’s haste to claim her pear-shaped prize, she nearly locked herself out of the hotel room.
“I was so excited, I left the room without the ring box and the code word and had to race back up to grab it,” she said. “And I’m glad I did as the ring is even more stunning in real life.”
TFE Hotels’ Chief Revenue Officer, Shaizeen Contractor, said the Princess and the Pear competition was created in partnership with one of the country’s oldest jewellers, Fairfax & Robert, to mark the spectacular relaunch of The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins following a multi-million-dollar refurbishment.
“The Savoy on Little Collins has a new name and a new look that pays tribute to the Art Deco era of the original Hotel Alexander built on the site in 1928,” Shaizeen said. “With Princess and the Pear, we were inspired by the glamour of those days and by the fairy-tale story of Princess and the Pea and wanted to do something special for our guests.”
The property’s ‘find a ring’ competition, attracted entries from around the country, and saw hotel guests wax lyrical about why they deserved to win the bespoke Fairfax & Roberts’ ring.
For Stephanie, her entry was written at midnight, as she was finalising her travel bookings and she spontaneously decided to enter the competition.
“I put an entry in and, honestly, that was the last I thought about it until I arrived,” she said. “I’ve been lusting after a pink diamond or a pink sapphire for ages, so you could say I’m tickled pink to win.”
“I can’t wait to tell my sister, but I think she’ll hate me for it.”
Stephanie now has ten thousand extra reasons to book another stay when next in Melbourne, but she needs no encouragement.
“I always try and stay at The Savoy on Little Collins when I’m in town for business,” Stephanie said. “I love the hotel and I love the architecture – it’s just a beautiful atmosphere after a stressful day in the office.”

12 October 2018
The Calile Hotel, Brisbane’s most anticipated new address, has officially opened its doors as Australia’s first urban resort. With an award-wining restaurant, cocktail bar, day spa and fashion boutiques within the hotel, guests have the world on their doorstep. Located in the heart of the James Street precinct, the175-room new-build hotel is managed by TFE Hotels under the Collection by TFE Hotels brand.
TFE Hotels Chairman Allan Vidor said The Calile Hotel was the most anticipated hotel opening in Brisbane this year. “It brings together all the best things that Brisbane has to offer – its subtropical climate, a relaxed yet sophisticated setting and an array of forward-thinking fashion boutiques and dining offerings including our new Lobby Bar, all set against the urban streetscape of James Street.”
The building is designed by Brisbane architects Richards & Spence to meld with the leafy, landscaped facades they created in the precinct, in a project imagined by brothers Michael and Cal Malouf.
The Lobby Bar, on the ground-floor of the hotel, offers a sophisticated space to enjoy cocktails inspired by the local area. Flagship restaurant, Hellenika, opens out on the pool terrace and has an exciting modern Greek menu, similar to its award-winning sister restaurant by Simon Gloftis on the Gold Coast. The new restaurant sits in a vast 600 square metre floor space and offers dining under the stars at poolside cabanas. An additional new dining precinct, Ada Lane, adjoins the hotel, offering five new street level tenancies dedicated to eateries and bars.
One of Australia’s top wellness and spa facilities will complete the experience. The woman behind Brisbane’s famous The Dome Retreat, Meaghan South, has opened KAILO Wellness Medispa on the pool deck level which boasts 10 treatment rooms. South and her team will provide a holistic wellness experience that combines ancient wisdom with modern approaches to skin health, medical aesthetics and beauty essentials in a space designed for relaxation and restoring vitality. Partnering with Ms South is Brisbane Cosmetic Medicine Specialist Dr Edwina Morgan who will head up a team of professional paramedical therapists and doctors.
Rounding out the wellness offering will be Forme Fitness, offering technologically advanced gym equipment and personal training, in a boutique space with well-considered and luxurious facilities. Owner Tristian Forbes has been in the fitness industry for over 10 years. He and his team will offer full fitness services to hotel guests and local members.
Australia’s most sought-after fashion labels have opened their Queensland flagship stores on the ground floor of the hotel on James Street, Brisbane’s foremost retail and lifestyle precinct. Acclaimed fashion innovator Dion Lee; sustainable organic cotton favourite Bassike; Sydney leisure success story Venroy; internationally successful Bec & Bridge; and Dutch brand Love Stories will open stores in the hotel’s beautiful ground floor space, amid its indoor hanging gardens. Also joining The Calile Hotel will be current James Street retail outlets – Calexico Man, Wolfe & Ordnance, Andronis Fine Jewellery and Mister Zimi.
The hotel’s 175 generous guest rooms include nine suites and two premier suites. Each is designed with the ultimate guest experience in mind, with an individual balcony, Bluetooth sound bar, motorised blackout blinds, 55” flat screen television and complimentary new-release movies. Leisure facilities are designed to help guests embrace the authentic charm of the sub-tropical locale. Beautiful and flexible event spaces cater to intimate culinary soirees, poolside cocktail parties, a grand ballroom celebration or wedding for up to 500 people. Wedding guests and event delegates can unwind at the Lobby Bar, enjoy a poolside cocktail and dinner, energise in the fitness centre, or be pampered at the spa.
